How to Safely Get fresh Air

As social distancing guidelines continue and normal routines remain disrupted, cabin fever is starting to set in for many of us. With spring here and temperatures rising, the need to get outside is real—and necessary, too. Getting fresh air and exercise is important for your physical and mental health, especially during this time.  Take a look at our list of ways to get out of the house and get some much needed fresh air!

Take a Walk Around the Neighborhood

Take a walk around the block to see the spring flowers popping up in yards and the blooming trees.  Or break the bikes out of the garage and go on a family bike ride around the neighborhood. Even a stroll to the mailbox is a chance to get up, stretch your legs and breathe some fresh air.  Just be sure you are cautious about social distancing, keeping a minimum of six feet between you and anyone not in your immediate family. Avoid crowded parks and walking paths. Wave to your neighbors from afar, but save the hugs and handshakes for later!

Do Those Outdoor Chores

Under normal circumstances, outdoor chores like washing your car aren’t really considered to be fun activities,  but these are not normal times. Look for ways to get outside and accomplish tasks you’ve been meaning to tackle anyway.  Pick weeds from your garden, throw mulch, plant your seeds for the spring or power wash your outdoor areas. The options are endless and this is a great way to cross items off your to-do list and enjoy a little sunshine!

Go on a Hike

While crowded walking trails might be off-limits, going for a hike would be a great alternative to get some fresh air and a little exercise.  Pittsburgh has its fair share of hiking spots that won’t be as crowded as parks. If you do go for a hike, make sure to bring your furry friend and social distance from others. Its also important to hike what you are comfortable with.  You wouldn’t want to get in over your head and end up hurting yourself, as medical assistance is limited right now. Relax Outside

It might be the most simple, but just relaxing outside is a great way to get some fresh air.  Pull up a chair to your patio and open a good book. If it is nice enough, you could even set your home office up outside for the day.  If that doesn’t entice you, plan an outdoor picnic with your family. Throw your favorite meal on the grill and set up a blanket to sit on for dinner.  If it is warm enough after dinner, you could have an outdoor movie for your kids!

Foster a Pet

Right now, many shelters are still open for businesses and taking adoptions. If you’ve been on the fence about bringing home a new furry friend, now may be the perfect time. By helping an animal in need you’ll also be helping yourself. Find a local shelter and reach out to see what their current policies are. Pets are great motivators to go for a walk through your neighborhood or toss a ball around in the backyard.  The perfect excuse to get out and get some fresh air!

Even though life is a little different right now, we can still get outside and enjoy the spring weather! Be sure to practice social distancing when you are out and stay safe.  For more recommendations on what to do while you’re home, check out our blog article on how to stay busy at home!
