Education and Excitement for Kids: Spend a Summer in Pittsburgh!

It wasn’t long ago that we shared some fun Pittsburgh places to take Mom or suggested a few of the ‘Burgh’s best ways to show Dad some love; but, now that school is out for the summer, it is time to point out why Pittsburgh leads the pack when it comes to summertime fun for the kiddos.

Today’s list doesn’t even include the city’s legendary Kennywood or Sandcastle Water Park, two summer staples for Pittsburgh kids. Instead, we found a summer full of fun and educational things to do with your kids in Pittsburgh.

Carnegie Science Center

It may be no more pencils and no more books, but there is still plenty of educational exploration going on at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Science Center. In addition to the already incredible robotics, nautical and out-of-this-world exhibits typically on display at the museum, there are tons of educational summer camps for students that range in age from 4 to 14. Camps run now through mid-August and even provide before and after-camp care for parents on the go.

The Carnegie Science Center offers camps on topics that include everything from engineering to culinary chemistry. Check out their complete summer schedule.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

A trip to the zoo is already educational, but the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium are taking fun learning to the next level this summer with Zoo Camp Programs for children that range from infants to age 13. There are day-long events for younger campers and week-long events for more experienced animal lovers. Each program includes an introduction to creatures, crafts and more!

Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh

On a daily basis, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh features educational exhibits on everything from gravity to gardening. So, it is no wonder that their summer camp options cover topics that range from art to adventure! Science, technology, engineering and math education are big areas of interest for today’s students and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is catering to those tastes with their camps this summer.

Don’t think that you have to sign your kids up for summer camp to have them experience some educational fun in Pittsburgh this summer. Climbing aboard the Gateway Clipper Fleet or a Just Ducky Tour are two other memorable ways to soak in Pittsburgh’s rich history.

Want your kids to learn more about the nature that surrounds the city’s three rivers this summer? Take them to one of the Pittsburgh’s regional parks. Four parks within the city limits offer residents everything from trails to playgrounds to sights and more!

It’s obvious that Pittsburgh is a city full of educational exploration for kids this summer. Once you’ve exhausted the minds of your youngsters, show them the thrills, spills and splashes of Pittsburgh’s Kennywood and Sandcastle Water Parks. Because, when it comes to education and excitement for kids, you won’t need a vacation. Make Pittsburgh your staycation this summer!
